In the Garden: How to Make and Plant a Bean Teepee

How to Make and Plant a Bean Teepee

We grow a lot of green beans in our garden.   I guess you might say we are green bean fanatics.  My husband things that's the only reason we grow a garden.  That just might be the truth!

We can't buy the beans we plant in our garden from the farmers market, store, or anywhere else.   The green beans we grow in our garden have a taste beyond believe.   They are something like you Grandmother or Great grandmother  might have planted in her garden years ago.

The ones that we grow that are climbers (they need support) are called Rattlesnake Green beans.   We order them from the Seed Savers Exchange .   The beans look like the skin of a rattlesnake when picked but become all green when you cook them.  The taste is beyond belief and we get a great yield!

One of the first things I do in our garden every Spring is make bean teepees.   I start with mostly bamboo poles although some plastic poles are in the midst.

Top of bean pole

You will be using four to five poles per teepee.   Push each pole down just as far down in the ground as you can.   Placing them at angle so they meet together at the top.   It always helps to do this just after the garden has been tilled.

Tie them together at the top going around and around each post with twine.   I want them to stick together well, so I might over do it just a tad.

Bottom of bean pole

Wrap each post in twine again in the middle and towards the bottom of the teepee.

Make a circle around bean pole

Make a circle around each post with a hoe.

Plant your beans!

Then plant green been seed completely around the circle and cover them with about an inch of dirt.

I've had my bamboo poles for 10 years or more.   I may need to replace some next year.   For the price of twine every year this is a great way to support climbing beans!

Now for the weeding.   Have you planted green beans this way?
